The Umayyad Mosque is located in the middle of the city, and it is one of the largest mosques. Its history dates back to the time of the Umayyad era. Sulayman Ibn Abdul Malek gave orders to build it to rival the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus which is similar in construction. The Abyssinians removed its ornaments, and it was struck by two fires. Sayf al-Dawla al-Hamadani renovated it later. The mosque is built on a piece of land of 105m x 77.75m. It has four gates, and it consists of a spacious yard paved by black and yellow marble. The yard is surrounded by three passageways and sanctuary. Its pulpit is similar to that in al-Aqsa Mosque because they were built at the same time. It formerly had four minarets, but now it has only one square minaret which is considered one of the oldest extant minarets in Aleppo. |
The mosque is said to contain the tomb of Prophet Yahya and many other valuable items, such as Holy Korans written by famous Arab and Turkish calligraphers, gilded and silvered antique lamps, and candle-stands. It has been recently renovated.
